At Clintons, we are very proud of our History and Heritage. The business was family-run and founded in 1968 by Don Lewin. The first store opened in Epping, Essex. By 1988 the business had grown to 77 stores. In 1994, the company had grown to 270 stores. In October 1994, Clinton Cards acquired 83 shops from Hallmark Cards, and in September 1995 acquired 112 shops from Carlton Cards. A further 211 shops were bought in 1998.

You’d think a leading UK book retailer would be all about selling books – and you’re right – Waterstones Uxbridge is the place to go for bestselling fiction and non-fiction, kids books, travel guides and loads of other stuff – but they also have a stash of stationery, gifts, cards, games and bits of literary kitsch that are worth a look too. You’ll find Waterstones Uxbridge at Unit 120 Lower Mall, High Street, Uxbridge, UB8 1GE – so just head to The Chimes shopping centre on Uxbridge’s High Street and you’ll be in the midst of a full-on book haven.

Actually, the Uxbridge store had a bit of a wobble in 2019 when it closed for refurbishment – and a big sign in the window promised it would be back in the Spring or Summer of 2020. However, the closure dragged on for more than five years because of the refurb and the pandemic – and it wasn’t until recently that the shop finally reopened. Barnard’s Bookshop in Windsor Street stood in for Waterstones Uxbridge during this time – but now the local community can get back to its books.
